Environment

With input from our customers, employees and community groups, we've identified three areas of focus for our U.S. operations where we can be most effective:

Responsible paper use
Energy and emissions
Engaging our employees and communities
Building awareness and making an impact

The green leaf represents products, services and business-related initiatives that contribute to the environmental goals and commitments of TD Bank Group, which include:
  • Contributing to a low-carbon economy through reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or reduction of energy usage
  • Growing areas of protected critical forest habitat and enhancing urban green space
  • Reducing paper usage
  • Using paper and wood products derived from sustainably-managed forests

Responsible Paper Use

Reducing paper is a win for the environment, a win for our customers and a win for our business.

We are committed to finding effective ways to provide customers with information while minimizing paper. By raising awareness of the responsible use of paper, we also support sustainable forest management certification programs. Our commitment to responsible paper use includes:

  • TD Forests: Through the TD Forests program, we have two goals: 1) reduce the amount of paper we use and ensure the paper we purchase is from sustainably managed forests and 2) grow the area of protected natural forest ecosystems across North America. We've partnered with The Nature Conservancy to protect more than 2 football fields of forest habitat each and every day.
  • Recycling: 30% of our office-based paper waste stream is disposed of through our participation in the Boise® Closed Loop System, a paper recycling program that diverts paper waste from landfills and reuses it in the production of recycled office paper. This initiative diverts 1,500 metric tons of our office paper waste from landfill every year.
  • Providing e-Banking Options: We want to help our customers who are interested in reducing their paper with convenient options like online banking, mobile banking and online statements.

Energy and emissions

Did you know that TD Bank was the first North American-based bank to become carbon neutral in 2010?

Our commitment to the environment has transformed the way we use energy and manage our buildings.

Renewable Energy: All of our electricity, including our ATM network, is supplied by renewable energy.

  • In 2012, TD Bank received the Green Power Partner Leadership Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • TD Bank was named to the Bloomberg Clean Energy Index for 2012.

Real Estate: Our green building design standards challenge us to design buildings that produce energy rather than consume it.

  • In 2012, 100% of new retail locations in the U.S. were built to achieve Leadership in Energy Design (LEED) certification, and we will continue to apply this policy.
  • TD Bank has opened more than 100 LEED Stores and corporate offices.
  • We were the first to open a net-zero energy bank location in the U.S. in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. This store is designed to produce more electricity than it uses and was featured in Chain Store Age's 2012 Retail Store of the Year Design Competition, winning the Sustainability category.

Engaging our employees and communities

Learn how to get involved in events, projects and grants including TD Tree Days and TD Green Streets.

Our employees and community partners are our biggest environmental advocates. We've developed a number of programs, including employee tree planting events through TD Tree Days and grants for local forestry projects through TD Green Streets.

In 2012, The New York City Parks Foundation presented TD Bank with a Green Leaf Award for our work in promoting local green spaces as essential community resources.
