New Chip Technology for Your Visa® Cards

Greater security and worldwide acceptance make your Visa credit, debit and reloadable prepaid cards even better

Great news! Your TD Bank credit, debit and reloadable prepaid cards now have been upgraded with chip technology. You still get all the same great benefits, plus features that make your cards more secure and easier to use around the world.

Chip card benefits

  • Greater protection from fraud - The microchip embedded in your card encrypts your data, providing enhanced security against counterfeiting when used at a chip-enabled terminal.
  • Easy to use at home or internationally - Less hassle using a chip card overseas! The chip technology is the global standard and is already in use in over 80 countries, including Canada and throughout Europe and Asia.
  • Acceptable at non-chip enabled card terminals - Your new card has the embedded chip as well as a magnetic stripe. If a store or merchant has not upgraded to chip technology, you'll just use your card as you did previously by swiping the magnetic stripe

It's easy to use your new chip card at any store or merchant

At a chip-enabled terminal

  • Instead of swiping, insert your card face up into the terminal
  • Don't take the card out until the transaction is complete
  • Sign or enter your PIN (for debit cards), if asked, and remove the card

At a traditional terminal without chip technology

  • Just swipe your card as you've done in the past
  • Sign or enter your PIN (for debit cards), if asked

For phone or online purchases

  • Complete your purchases just as you've done in the past.

Why does TD Bank now offer chip cards?

Chip technology is already the global standard because of its advanced security features. This technology will become the standard in the U.S. as well within the next few years. We want our customers to have access to the best security features right now.

What is a chip card?

A chip card, also called an EMV chip card or Smart Chip card, uses an embedded microchip instead of a magnetic stripe to store data. The microchip embedded in your card encrypts your data, providing enhanced security against counterfeiting when used at a chip-enabled terminal.

Is it safe to use the magnetic card stripe at merchants that don't have a chip-enabled terminal?

While chip technology provides enhanced security, using the magnetic stripe continues to be a safe way to use your card. Remember that you are also always protected by Visa's Zero Liability* coverage, which protects you in the event of card fraud.

When using my chip debit or reloadable card can I decide to use my PIN or sign for the transaction?

You may have the option to choose to use your PIN or sign for your transaction. However, TD Bank is an early adopter of chip technology for debit and reloadable cards, which means that you may encounter merchants or terminals that are not ready to process chip 'debit' transactions, only chip 'credit' transactions. In this instance, if required by the merchant, you may have to sign for your purchase rather than entering your PIN. Your purchase will be debited from your available balance just like a 'debit' purchase.
